Meet Enov.one’s Medical Think Tank

Introduction

Our mission at enov.one is to rescue 1 billion patients from the limits of standard care… because everyone deserves their own health algorithm.

As patients failed by the standard-of-care healthcare system, each of us deeply understands suffering and the extreme asymmetries in patient care. The best doctors are often inaccessible: too hard to find, too expensive, and too busy. We were fortunate enough to find the resources to solve our health challenges (e.g. access to leading-edge doctors, biomedical research backgrounds, early-access to new health technologies, money to pay for expensive diagnostics and visit fees, time for sick-leaves to figure it out, etc.). Most are not.

We realized that if we could translate the protocols of top doctors via telehealth, then we could enable millions of patients to have affordable access to the world’s best care.

Ultimately, we learned a secret. Great doctors treat endophenotypes (root-causes), not symptoms. This often requires the evaluation of millions of data points, including medical history, clinical signs and symptoms, blood labs, genetics, microbiome data, and wearables.

By developing a platform to deliver endophenotypic care and tracking patient outcomes, we see a world where our learning models will eventually exceed the best human intelligence.

Dr. Robert Krochmal

Medical Director

Dr. Robert Krochmal’s inspiration to become a physician was deeply influenced by his grandfather, Dr. Henry Krochmal, one of the last general practitioners of his time to make regular house calls. After Dr. Henry Krochmal’s death in the early 1990s, the local newspapers in Meriden, Connecticut, were filled with letters from his patients. Reading these letters profoundly affected Dr. Robert Krochmal, knowing how his grandfather had personally touched so many lives. A native of Vienna, Austria, Dr. Henry Krochmal completed his medical degree there, studying under notable teachers like Sigmund Freud.

Before having the chance to practice his new profession in Europe, young Dr. Henry Krochmal and his family fled Nazi aggression in 1938. Arriving in New York City with nothing more than his Austrian medical degree, Henry worked as a busboy while earning his medical certifications in the United States. He eventually built a practice where he treated his patients holistically for over 50 years, continuing to make house calls until the very end.

Biology of the Rainforest

Before attending medical school, Dr. Robert Krochmal accepted a position as a science teacher in Lima, Peru, where he lived and worked for a year. During breaks in the school year, he traveled and explored the country, discovering the healing traditions of the Amazon rainforest. He learned about the fascinating and delicate biodiversity, culture, and healing traditions of the largest remaining tropical ecosystem on Earth. Dr. Krochmal led his biology students to the southern Amazon, where they learned about the ecology and medicinal potential of rainforest plants. Years later, as a medical student, he returned to the Sacred Valley of Cusco, Peru, where he assisted in staffing a small Andean medical clinic and participated in mentoring sessions with a local shaman in Ollantaytambo.

Passion for Integrative Medicine

Influenced by these experiences, Dr. Robert Krochmal entered medical school at UCLA with a desire to integrate a deeper understanding into his studies of Western medicine. While training at White Memorial Medical Center in East Los Angeles, his integrative perspective towards medicine and healing was nurtured. Surrounded by a community rich with elders knowledgeable in medicinal plants and traditional cures, yet plagued with diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, Dr. Krochmal deepened his passion for finding and treating the root causes of disease and suffering. Despite the long hours during his medical internship, he initiated a project to transform a vacant lot adjacent to the hospital into a community garden. This endeavor brought together individuals from the hospital, surrounding community, and local schools to create an oasis for healing. The garden now includes fruit and vegetable plots, a medicinal herb section, solar panels, and a community area for gathering and exercise. It serves as an example of nature thriving in the city, connecting a cutting-edge medical center with the healing power of plants, healthy food, and community engagement.

After completing his training in Family Medicine, Dr. Krochmal pursued a two-year fellowship at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition. There, he researched the interplay between genetic and nutritional factors in health and disease and studied the effects of medicinal plants and phytonutrients on human health. He explored a broad range of medical literature documenting the healing properties and mechanisms of plant-based medicines and nutrients, trained in medical approaches to weight management, and studied traditional healing systems from around the world. Specifically, he investigated families of antioxidants, such as polyphenols in green tea and anthocyanidins in pomegranates, as well as the effects of Cordyceps sinensis, a Chinese mushroom known to increase exercise capacity.

Currently, Dr. Robert Krochmal resides in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains, where he continues to draw upon the healing energy of nature and engages with soil, plants, insects, and animals. This ongoing connection to a healthy ecosystem serves as a reminder of the relationship between environmental health and individual well-being.
